Knock knock knock knock knock
There is a knocking at this house
Who is it?
No one is there.
Knock knock knock knock knock
Search every room with the ear to the wall
Never to find where it is coming from
Knock knock knock knock knock
What do you want?
There is no answer
And so it goes
For 42 years
The house kept knocking and I kept asking
After awhile it got softer
After awhile I didn't hear it
After awhile it became
one of those things
A book never finished
A puzzle never solved
A language never learned
A guitar never played
A room never painted
A girl never dated
A ring never worn
A child never born
Still, it goes on
Knock knock knock knock knock
And still
I won't

Pathways
Understand, that I'll slip quietly
Away from the noisy crowd
When I see the pale
Star rising, blooming, over the oaks.
I'll pursue solitary pathways
Through the pale twilit meadows,
With only this one dream:
You come too.

Happy Death
He was conscious of the disastrous fact that love and desire must be expressed in the same way...
Impregnable Question

where are you?
Matilde, where are you? Down here I noticed,
under my necktie and just above my heart,
a certain pang of grief between the ribs,
you were gone that quickly.
I needed the light of your energy,
I looked around, devouring hope.
I watched the void without you that is like a house,
nothing left but tragic windows.
Out of sheer taciturnity the ceiling listens
to the fall of the ancient leafless rain,
to feathers, to whatever the night imprisoned:
so I wait for you like a lonely house
till you will see me again and live in me.
Till then my windows ache.

In the end we will arrive where we started...
We shall not cease from exploration
and the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
when the last of earth left to discover
is that which was the beginning;
at the source of the longest river
the voice of the hidden waterfall
and the children in teh apple tree
not known, because not looked for
but heard, half heard in the stillness
between two waves of the sea.
Quick now, here, now, always--
A condition of complete simplicity
(costing not less than everything)
and all shall be well and
all manner of thing shall be well
when the tongues of flame are in-folded
into the crowned knot of fire
and the fire and the rose are one.

The images we create could turn into wild beasts and tear us to pieces.

one by one people were swept away
calling endearing things to each other, using pet names.
'Achilles, meet Angus.' Then it all happened so quickly I
guess I never knew where we were going, where the pavement
was taking us.
Things got real quiet in the oubliette.
I was still reading Jean-Christophe. I'll never finish the darn thing.
Now is the time for you to go out into the light
and congratulate whoever is left in our city. People who survived
the eclipse. But I was totally taken with you, always have been.
Light a candle in my wreath, I'll be yours forever and will kiss you.

this is just to say
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

in comedy as in tragedy, late in Act Three, the heroine hesitates. Her Fate is in the balance. It's what old Corneille and young Moliere call suspsense...ion.

Vampires are lucky, they can feed on others. We gotta eat away at ourselves. We gotta eat our legs to get the energy to walk. We gotta come, so we can go. We gotta suck ourselves off. We gotta eat away at ourselves til there's nothing left but appetite. We give, and give and give crazy. Cause a gift that makes sense ain't worth it. Jesus said seventy times seven. No one will ever understand why, why you did it. They'll just forget about you tomorrow, but you gotta do it.
